EV Disconnector,
the Effort to Go Farther

Disconnector

Mileage has become even more crucial factor in electric vehicles.

As with the conventional internal combustion engines, efficiency is especially important in electric vehicles. This is because the distance that can be traveled by a single charge has a great impact on the product selection due to the problems such as battery capacity and charging. The most important thing that customers consider when purchasing an electric vehicle is the mileage per charge (ranked 1st place with 45% of the considerations when purchasing). HYUNDAI TRANSYS has developed the world's first AWD disconnector technology for electric vehicles that can improve such driving efficiency.

The Key to Increase the Mileage of Electric Vehicles

The disconnector system developed by HYUNDAI TRANSYS can reduce the unnecessary power loss and improve power efficiency (electric fuel efficiency) by about 6% to 8%. The vehicle mileage also increases by this much. For example, if you have a vehicle that can travel 400 kilometers with a single charge, mounting the disconnection system will allow you to travel about 430 kilometers with the same battery. In addition, if the battery capacity is reduced, the battery space is freed up by this much so that the space inside the vehicle can be enlarged.

AWD is superior in driving performance and safety. Even in the difficult driving conditions such as snow, rain, and icy roads, it has excellent grip force between the road surface and the wheels, making it essential for the drivers who place emphasis on safety. Particularly, 30% of vehicles sold are AWD in North America. It is also expected that people who choose the AWD system will continue to increase in the future due to the safety in electric vehicles.

The AWD system in an electric vehicle consists of main drive wheels and auxiliary drive wheels. HYUNDAI TRANSYS' disconnector system developed this time was installed in Hyundai's IONIQ for the first time. In the rear wheel-based IONIQ, the rear wheels are the main drive wheels and the front wheels are the auxiliary drive wheels. At this time, the disconnector system is attached to the front wheels, which are the auxiliary driving wheels, and serves to cut off the power between the motor and the wheels.

Advantages of HYUNDAI TRANSYS Disconnector System

At first, it failed repeatedly because it was the first technology applied in electric vehicles. During the first endurance test, only 20% of the target level was achieved, and excessive wear of the teeth of the gear or poor meshing occurred. Then we had a doubt on whether the design concept can be the same as the existing method since the electric vehicle's power source is the motor, not the engine. So we went back to the beginning and redesigned the product by digging into the power source. It was possible to control the meshing synchronization speed according to the motor speed, change the mesh length, and increase the meshing success rate. In addition, we were able to complete the first disconnector system technology for electric vehicles by solving “differential noise” and “squeaking (switching shock)” that were not found in existing internal combustion engines.

Excellent Decelerator System of HYUNDAI TRANSYS

The era of electric vehicles is fast approaching. Our company is the only company with a full lineup of transmissions in the world, and is a company specializing in decelerators that have continuously made special decelerators for electric vehicles, trains and subways. It is often said that decelerators are less complicated than conventional transmissions and no special skills are required, but this is actually not the case. Rather, it is considered to have many more possibilities and opportunities in the future as a component which is the key to improving fuel efficiency. HYUNDAI TRANSYS will continue to develop and introduce reducers that are suitable for the electric vehicle era, including integrated decelerators.
